Olen aina rakastanut majakoita. Miksen siis kuvaisi niitä? * I´ve always loved lighthouses. So, why shouldn´t I take photos of them?

Kolka, Latvia

Kolkan niemi on aina ollut vaarallinen laivoille. Se ulottuu 6 kilometriä rannasta merelle. Täältä löytyy Itämeren suurin laivojen hautuumaa.

1500-luvulle asti niemen kärjessä poltettiin merkkivaloja, jotta laivat osasivat kääntyä oikeassa kohdassa. Vanhin kirjallinen lähde mainitsee puisen majakan merkinantotulineen 1532. 1787 puinen torni korvattiin kivisellä. Jäännökset majakasta löytyvät edelleen Kolkan nimen kärjestä. 1858 vaarallinen Kolkan niemi merkittiin majakkalaivalla.

Nykyisen majakan rakennustyöt alkoivat 1872. Majakan korkeus on 21 metriä. Se sijaitsee keinotekoisella saarella, joka on tehty kivistä. Rakennusmateriaali saareen tuotiin Kurzemesta ja Virosta kesäisin laivoilla, talvella reillä. Torni on punainen ja katto on väriltään musta. Majakan valo sijaitsee 20 metrin korkeudessa merenpinnan yläpuolella. Valo on valkoinen (1s päällä, 1s pois, 1s päälle, 7s pois). Valo näkyy noin 10 merimailia. Majakka toimii kaikki vuoden päivät pimeään aikaan.

The lighthouse of Cape Kolka have a long history. The cape itself has always been dangerous for navigation because of its shelf stretching 6 km far into the sea. The largest ship graveyard in the Baltic Sea can be found there.

As far as in the 13th century watcg fires were lit for the sailors to fing the turning point between the Irbe Strait and the Gulf og Riga. In weitten sources the first mentionet wooden lighthouse with watch fire dates back to 1532. In 1787 the wooden towers were replaced by square stonewall ones. The remains of the lighthouse at the Cape of Kolka can be viewed to this day. From 1858 the dangerous Kolka shelf was marked by a lightship.

The construction of the present lighthouse was started in 1872. Lighthouse's height is 21 m. It is situated on a man-made island which is made of rocks. To build the island boulders were carried from Kurzeme and Estonia by boats or sledge on ice in winter. The tower is red and the roof of it is coloured in black. Light is situated at the height of 20 meters above sea level. The light is in white colour (sequency of the light 1s on, 1s off, 1s on, 7s off). The light is seen about 10 sea miles. Lighthouse is working all year at the days dark time.
